In Our Shoes: Seven Women Reveal Their Soles
Published in Paperback by Fenestra Books (April, 2003)
Authors: Charlotte Rogers Brown and J. McFerren
Average review score:

In our Shoes: by Charlotte Rogers Brown
Seven women, using a unique format, individually reveal their life story. They each tell of their past experiences, their present situation and their future aspirations. The ladies are very open, honest and candid in divulging their innermost secrets. This makes for a book you cannot stop reading until it is completed. The reader is compelled to read some of the stories more than once because they are so intriging. You feel you know each person and can identify with their humaness. Everyone has a story to tell. These ladies have done so in a riviting and inspiring manner.

Any Woman can fit in these shoes!
These are seven big, powerful, distinct voices. The courage and resilience of the women behind those voices make this one of the best books of this type I have read in a LONG time. It is one of those books we all need when we are dragging, when we need to refresh that connection with our community and maybe our community isn't right there just now. While we may or may not agree that life is one long birth canal, these women clearly see Light at the end of their tunnels and that Light has transformed them in a way that is simple and direct. There is no hocus pocus here, no new age mumbo-jumbo, just survivors who held on to their senses of humor every step of the way and who can write so well that we can share in their journey.

Powerful Stories from Women about Life
If you're a woman having a hard time with life...like the friend who shared this book with me...this book is especially for you. If you're a man having a hard time understanding life or women, this book is especially for you too! The stories of these women are riveting, as they take you through the lowest lows and highest highs of their life experiences on this planet. But best of all, these accomplished women show us how they triumphed over their adversities and healed themselves so they could create new lives of personal fulfillment and spiritual contentment. And those lessons are what so many of us need as we try to find happiness and fulfillment in these turbulent times. Highly recommended.

Intimate Death: How the Dying Teach Us How to Live

A compassionate understanding of death.
My sisters and I read this book while our mother prepared to die. It helped me begin to understand emotional patterns of illness and some of the mysteries of death. After reading Intimate Death, I had the strength to stay by my mother's side.

I highly recommend this book
My mom has advanced cancer and is terminal. I was looking for something to help everyone in my family deal with it all. I was worried that some of the books I came across would be too depressing to give to my mom, but while of course I was sad alot while reading Intimate Death, it was also very uplifting and helpful. I'm really glad I read it *before* my mom dies.

spiritual yet practical lesson about Death and Dying
A very powerful book .Spiritual, philosophical, yet very practical for the dying and the survivors.A great teacher about death and dying,de Hennezel leaves you with a powerful lesson about life

An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis, Objects in Plain English

Book has been released in 2nd edition!
Check out:
"An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis, Objects and UML in Plain English" by David William Brown.

ISBN 0471371378

All diagrams have been redrawn in UML, and the text has been extensively updated to use UML terminology.

Excellently written...rich in concepts
This book is good for both beginners and practitioners. I used this book as text book for my course of OOAD. The book was not only interesting enough for students but it also helped me in my practical work.

The number of cases and exercises given are also sufficient but a few more are always good. Its an excellent book for anybody having beginner to intermediate exposure to OOA. The book is beautifully written and one enjoys reading it.

"Objects In Plain English" As Advertised
This book is exactly as advertised, describing Object Oriented Analysis techniques in plain English. While it takes awhile to get to the object oriented chapters, the author has provided enough introductory information such that those who are either new to information systems and development methodoligies, or need a bit of a refresher, receive enough background to be well prepared for the rest of the book.

I've attempted to read other books in the field, but they always seem to assume that the reader already possesses a certain amount of knowledge that apparently I didn't.

For those who consider themselves already somewhat knowledgeable in Object Oriented Analysis, Design, or Development, you may want to consider more advanced level books. Again, this book reads as advertised. It's excellent!

It's a Big World, Charlie Brown

Author: Charles M. Schulz

Good Grief!
All of Sparky's strip from 1997 in full color! Plus 2 from 1996 as an added bonus.

Included are strips where: Rerun gets suspended from kindergarden *twice!, the Literary Ace geting help from Lucy, a look at Valley Forge and WWI, Olaf and Andy's quest for Spike, Charlie Brown getting a love leter...

Let's face it: Charles 'Sparky' Schulz was great. This book belongs in any fan's collection.

Big World: Peanuts 1997
This book covers the Penauts gang and a whole year's worth of strips in color, the year being 1997. This is another example of the same great humor he has given us for fifty years, and I will always miss him.

Another gem from Sparky
One the best books with Charlie Brown's failures, Rerun's attempts at getting away from school, Snoopy's encounters with General Washington at Valley Forge. Its a good collectible. One of the best peanuts books. Although its like Peanuts 2000, only 2 or 3 strips are the same.

Jericho
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (June, 2001)
Author: Brown Cardwell
Average review score:

Jericho Lives
With a strong and believable female protagonist, a well crafted plot, appropriately evil villain, and poignant love story, Jericho has it all! Most impressive are Ms. Cardwell's descriptions of the city, its environs, daily life and culture. Her research skills are admirable and the historical detail gives the book a depth which exceeds the plot. Well done!

History Alive - Jericho's fall
Very well done!!!!! I will read it again to get more detail and experience the excitement out of every chapter!!! Brown Cardwell grabs your attention by building a story in sections just like the city!!
I am always drawn into a tale when it is based on a historical event. The city was drawn out for me in detail such that I could see the strength it possessed in its time while also shown its weaknesses that I knew were to lead to its demise. The city gates, the market, and the power center were only a few pieces of the city that highlighted basic construction/position as well as the logic behind them for holding off intruders, inviting trade, and enabling control of the public.
The characters had their own strengths and weaknesses which made each one of them not just part of the story but key elements to unlock this world. It is difficult to imagine how Brown Cardwell brings this middle class woman into the pivot point of male dominated history making her actions more than plausible, they become probable in your mind. The men who would retain their power and wealth through any means and those who would see the truth were not one dimentional. The actions could be reasoned even when not endorsed. They possessed all human characteristics we see today.
This is the first of many stories of this type I hope to read by her. Bravo!! I will be looking for her name in the new book lists!!!!!!!

Jericho - Big Winner
JERICHO is one of my all-time favorites. The plot was well-crafted, and the characters came alive for me. I admired the heroine so much. This is a wonderful book for people of all ages, and it would show young people, especially, how to live with uncommon courage. I recommend it highly!

The Jimtown Store Cookbook : Recipes from Sonoma County's Favorite Country Market
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (02 April, 2002)
Authors: Carrie Brown and John Werner
Average review score:

My new favorite
This has quickly become the cookbook I turn to most often (and I have hundreds of them). Everything I've tried has been so flavorful and so easy to pull off. The roasted figs and Indian cashews are now a cocktail party staple (and I keep getting calls for the recipe). Same goes for the cheese and pecan crackers. The bourbon-marinaded steak has made me a much more frequent meat-eater. And just this past weekend I made the incredibly easy buttermilk pie, to much fanfare. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It's OUTSTANDING.

Seasonal best--all year long.
From a small-town country store in the Northern California wine region, comes a great collection of recipes and entertaining ideas using a variety of seasonal products. Authors Carrie Brown and John Werner (with a wonderful assist from cookbook pro Michael McLaughlin) have compiled the very best of seasonal recipes and menu ideas used in the Jimtown Store and its catering business. The recipes are clear and easy to follow (though I wish that the publisher had worked harder to print the COMPLETE recipe on 1 or 2 facing pages--flipping the page in the middle of food prep is a real hassle!). Overall, though, it is a nicely written volume, which provides ideas for springtime suppers, autumn tailgate parties, Fourth of July barbecues, as well as holiday meals. There is an extensive chapter on salads of all sorts, plus another on sauces, condiments, and relishes, just to give us a few new twists on some old stand-by themes. There are some great weekend ideas in the chapter entitled Breakfast Baking. I've already made the maple-glazed meatloaf for dinner (leftovers make terrific sandwiches), and am now planning Grilled Steak with Backyard Bourbon Marinade as well as Apple-Buttermilk Slaw for some weekend lunch guests. Just in time for summer entertaining, this book is destined to become a year-round classic in my kitchen!

Jimtown takes the cake!
One of those unique cookbooks where you'll want to make every recipe, and where you'll actually be able to. Jimtown's style is unfussy, focused on flavor and experience. These recipes mix old and new, national and international cuisine with witty and informative writing. I'm busy working my way through making the recipes and haven't had a dud yet!

Journey to Joy
Published in Paperback by Quality Printing & Publications (02 January, 2001)
Author: Tami Coble Brown
Average review score:

An Outstanding Book that Everyone Should Read!
Based on the Old Testament Book of Ruth, the author does an outstanding job in making this enthralling story come alive. Her unique and interesting style of writing also brings out many practical and relevant lessons for us all to benefit from. Each of the thirteen chapters concludes with study questions and personal reflections.

This book will be a blessing to you. It certainly was for me!

Fascinating!
This book is a fascinating look at the Biblical book of Ruth. It tells the poignant story of Naomi and her daughter-in-law, Ruth, two widows who make the long journey from Moab to Bethlehem, where they will eventually find love and happiness once again. The author makes the story come alive and will make you feel that you are there. The book also has many practical application lessons that we can learn from this beautiful love story. Study questions at the end of each chapter make it an excellent choice for a group or personal study. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a better understanding of God's Word.

A very insightful book!
"Journey To Joy" is a wonderful study of Ruth, from the Old Testament. Sometimes, we think of Biblical characters as people with whom we couldn't have much in common; after all, they lived a LONG time ago. But the writer of "Journey To Joy" reminds us that Ruth's story can still teach us a lot about how to deal with our 21st century problems. In reflecting on Ruth's story, Tami Brown reveals how the Bible instructs us to deal with the challenges we all face each day; challenges that we deal with at work, at home, with friends and with foes. She paints a very clear picture of Ruth and her family's journey from fear, anger and depression, to hope, joy, and gratitude. In reading this book, we learn that OUR lives can benefit from knowing about Ruth's journey.

You'll enjoy this book a lot!

Jumping the Job Track: Security, Satisfaction, and Success As an Independent Consultant
Published in Paperback by Crown Pub (February, 1994)
Author: Peter C. Brown
Average review score:

Handbook for the career of your dreams.
All the time people ask me about going out on their own. This is the book I make them read before I spend my time talking to them. Tells the inside story of how to make your dream real, or whether to keep on dreaming

A wonderful, stimulating book
When I made the switch from advertising account executive to poet it was intricate; the transition continues to be challenging, thought quite pleasant and rewarding. Brown's book was certainly helpful, and I especially appreciated its assessibility, as well as its creative approach to solving problems. Helpful too, was the profile of Alexs Pate, someone who left the corporate arena to pursue freelance creative writing. A wonderful, stimulating book.

For practicality, this is where the rubber meets the road.
Many books are inspiring, but this one goes beyond the dream stage. Brown not only tells how people really start up a home-based business, but he even gives the reader an occasional kick in the butt to get out there and do things right. Read this book before starting a business on your own, and then read portions of it again regularly to get back on track after the business has been started

Le Mot Juste: A Dictionary of Classical & Foreign Words & Phrases
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (December, 1991)
Authors: John Buchanan-Brown, Jennifer Cang, Kogan Page, Ltd Staff Kogan Page, and LuAnn Walther
Average review score:

Incredibly useful book
I love Le Mot Juste. My 1987 edition copy is well-worn. It is good to see that the book is continuing to be updated. Sylvester Mawson's original version was published in 1934!

Nearly always, I have been successful in finding expressions I have looked up in these pages. But, if you are like me, a lover of lists, you will enjoy browsing when you are not hunting for the meaning of a word.

In my edition, the definitions are not separated into language groups, which means you don't have to know which language the expression comes from. But I would guess that most users of the book would have some idea of the likely section to hunt in. Could be confusing with Italian and Spanish, though!

Recommended for all lovers of language.

C'EST UN BON LIVRE
In a world where many foreign words and phrases have become increasingly common in both spoken and written English, this book is almost a necessity.

It clarifies numerous words and phrases from Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and Yiddish that are used, and just as often, misused, by English speakers and writers.

A few examples:

Under French we find "maison de societe" which literally translates to society house. I had always thought that this must refer to the manor in which some rich or powerful personage resided. No way! It really means a brothel. That's a good one not to misuse.

Here's another from the French language: How many of us know that "bel air" means poise, grace, or good deportment?

Any of us who have ever followed a court case have probably heard the Latin expression "in camera." That literally translates to "in a room," but really means "proceedings conducted in secret."

Now for one from the Italian. We have often heard that someone is a dilettante and most of us probably have some vague sense of what the word means, but how many of us could accurately define dilettante if asked? I'd hazard a guess that the honest answer would be "very few." A dilettante is an amateur, particularly an amateur lover of the arts, but there is a subtler nuance to the word. It also means that this amateur is one who approaches the subject with little or no serious study, and may well pretend to have more knowledge than he actually has.

This is just the surface. LE MOT JUSTE defines and discusses such disparate words and phrases as "Kung Fu," "Pandora's Box," "Nabob." "Kismet, Kimono, and Kibitzer," to name but a few. It also emphasises the nuances that often give the words and phrases their fuller meaning.

It's a good book for any literate person's book shelf.

The best book of its kind
I bought my first copy of this book ten years ago, and used it until it literally fell apart. This book should be included in any home library, especially in homes with students.

Leading People: Transforming Business from the Inside Out
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (March, 1996)
Authors: Robert H. Rosen and Paul B. Brown
Average review score:

Long overdue leadership principals for the 21st century.
From the introduction through the appendices, this book details timely and essential principals of leadership. It is an impressive publication that can be used as a tool for anyone in a leadership capacity. Transformation in the way we approach leadership is long-overdue, both in the corporate and the non-profit. This book lays it on the line and lights the way. Excellent.

Great insights from real world problems
This book cuts through the theory and rhetoric that cloud discussions on good management of people. It gets to the real issues and the approaches that the managers in this book used to face them. The book brings out the realities of being a manager and the overwhelming challenges that must be overcome. All of this tied together with a simple structure for good management philosophy.

Healthy change starts inside, from the personal level!
Rosen extends an invitation to the reader/leader to examine what healthy leadership looks like. This author invited us, in his earlier book, to examine and understand what healthy organizations look like. With healthy organizations as the foundation, healthy leadership as the building blocks, healthy people who are willing to be introspective and self-transforming are the DNA for transformation of leadership and organizations. An insightful approach, given that most books about "real change" (which seldom happens) focus externally, rather than internally. Real Change, according to Rosen, incorporates eight principles of the hard work of leading vs. mere posturing: vision, participation, learning, diversity, creativity, integrity, and community --- using wisdom as the implementation tool. Think this is impossible to do? There are rich examples of living/working people in existing organizations doing authentic inside-out transformation. A wonder-full challenge to the image managers who skim the surface and miss opportunities to be the butterfly wings that fan the potential wellness of organization health and evolution toward higher, more satisfying levels of functioning, both individually and collectively
